This is an incredibly exciting time for us at BAA! July 1, 2017 marked the start of our 20th school year. BAA is Boston’s first, and only, public high school for the visual and performing arts serving 465 students from every neighborhood throughout the city of Boston.
BAA provides a diverse student body, a majority who come from low-income families, access to a college-preparatory arts and academic education not otherwise available to them. With 64% of our students coming from high-needs families, few students entering BAA have ever had access to arts education. The results of our innovative approach to the curriculum, as well as our dedication to student support, have been remarkable.
Since our first cohort graduated in 2001, we have had over 1,300 graduates. Over 95% of our graduates have been accepted to college, with many being the first in their family to do so. We are very fortunate to have a College and Career Center funded by a federal Perkins Grant. Students and their families are urged to take advantage of this resource where they can receive all kinds of assistance, including filling out financial aid paperwork. Our 2016 graduates received over $3.4 million in scholarships and financial aid. This is one of many reasons BAA was honored with the national “School of Opportunity Award” that honors excellent public high schools that address the opportunity gap.
