Lace up your sneakers and join HAWC (Healing Abuse Working for Change) for the 25th anniversary of The Walk for HAWC, on Sunday, April 30th in Salem, MA with honorary chair Lieutenant Governor Karyn Polito. On average, nearly 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the United States and HAWC, the longest-standing domestic violence agency on the North Shore, is entirely dedicated to supporting victims of domestic abuse. Beginning and ending at the beautiful Salem Common, the annual 5k is HAWC’s largest fundraising and community event, attended by over 1,000 people each year. Their goal is to raise $115,000, and all of the proceeds from this event will go toward HAWC’s programs and services, which support over 2,700 clients annually.
Community members and supporters are invited to volunteer, sponsor, create or join a team for the 25th anniversary of the Walk for HAWC. There will be music, food and exciting activities available in the Salem Common before the Walk kicks off at noon. Walkers are encouraged to return to the Common upon finishing to enjoy a complimentary lunch graciously provided by Kelly’s Roast Beef.
“The Walk is such an important community event and we rely on our supporters to come together and raise funds for HAWC’s efforts to reduce domestic violence in our communities, as well as support and empower survivors,” said Paula Herrington, HAWC’s Executive Director. “HAWC has been providing critical domestic violence services for nearly 40 years and that is made possible in large part by the funds and awareness raised by the Walk.”
“I am honored to march in the Walk of HAWC and serve as honorary chair alongside the survivors of domestic abuse, and all those who are fighting to end it,” said Lt. Governor Karyn Polito. “As chair of the Governor’s Council to Address Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence I look forward to working with everyone involved to continue improving prevention and support for all those affected by domestic abuse in order to ensure that every Massachusetts resident is safe and free from violence.”
HAWC is dedicated to supporting the victims of domestic abuse and working to change social norms and behaviors that perpetuate violence and oppression. HAWC provides services and support to victims residing in 23 cities and towns on the North Shore, including offering a 24-hour hotline, Emergency Family Shelter, a Parent-Child Trauma Recovery Program, individual, legal and hospital advocacy, and dedicated support groups to assist victims of domestic abuse.
