Haley House Bakery Cafe

On Sunday, February 11th, from 2-6 PM at Haley House Bakery Café in Roxbury’s Dudley Square, more than a dozen phenomenal chefs will serve soups made from locally sourced ingredients to benefit Haley House’s Soup Kitchen in the South End. [Note: There are 4 time Slots for this event due to popular demand. 2pm is already sold out]

Upon entering, attendees select a handcrafted ceramic bowl, courtesy of MassArt’s Clay for Change student group. Moving from station to station, guests will be treated to delicious soups produced with locally sourced ingredients, reminded of the joy of eating locally all year round (even during the winter)! At the end of the event, attendees are invited to take their handmade bowls home with them.

Ingredients for the Souper Bowl are sourced from a selection of local farms and purveyors and Iggy’s Bread generously donates bread. A selection of soups featured in the past: Butternut Squash & Apple, Cream of Carrot, French Onion, Kambocha Mash, Kale, Pea Tendril, Pork & Bean, Root Vegetable & Lentil, Scotch Broth, Seafood Chowder, Mannish Water (Goats Head Soup), and Sweet & Spicy Parsnip.

Brief History of this Event: In 2009, the Boston Localvores, an informal group interested in supporting the local food movement, approached Haley House Bakery Café with the concept of a tasting event spotlighting locally sourced soups and the “Souper Bowl” was born. Seven years ago, MassArt’s Clay for Change student organization proposed a partnership to make bowls for this event (as part of the Empty Bowls movement), to support Haley House’s 50 year old Soup Kitchen (located in the South End since 1966). For the past several years, MassArt’s Center for Art and Community Partnerships has collaborated by coordinating community bowl-making workshops that add to the richness of the event.
