Background: 35 years ago as oil prices soared and the Reagan administration severely cut the Low Income Heating Assistance Program and the Low-Income Weatherization Assistance Program. In response, a small band of Bostonians worked to insulate—literally and figuratively—disenfranchised energy consumers from that era’s oil price shocks. They got together and formed a heating oil buyers’ group. A pro-consumer, not pro-consumption buyers’ group.
From these roots, Mass Energy has grown into an nonprofit that uses the buying power of, provides credible insight to, and serves as an advocate for energy consumers. Our mission is to harness the power that we have as energy consumers to bring about the low-carbon future we need to survive.
