Boston Gala Featuring Nelson Mandela’s Former Personal Chef and Actress Alfre Woodard for an Evening Celebrating South Africa and Heroes of that Country’s  Anti-Apartheid Movement

Featured guests “Chef Xoli,” President Nelson Madela’s former personal chef, and actress and BU alum Alfre Woodard will appear at the Boston-based South Africa Partners gala celebration on Saturday, May 14, at the Renaissance Boston Waterfront Hotel.

South Africa Partners (SAP) celebration will also honor heroes of that country’s anti-apartheid movement with SAP’s “Desmond Tutu Social Justice Award.” Honorees include Ahmed Kathrada, a lifelong friend of Nelson Mandela’s, who was sentenced to life in prison with Mr. Mandela and spent 26 years in prison. And Barbara Hogan, a Time Magazine “100 Most Influential People” selectee, who was also imprisoned for her role in the fight against apartheid.

The SAP celebration, known as an ITHEKO, in South Africa’s Xhosa language, is truly representative of South Africa in its authentic exuberance and festive celebration of life, food and the commitment to helping those in need.

Supporters of South Africa Partners mission—to improve the lives of South African children and adults living in disadvantaged communities through health and education-centric programs—and its “Desmond Tutu Social Justice Award” can contribute in several ways: through an event sponsorship, ticket purchases and/or by purchasing messages in the event’s program book.  The contact for ITHEKO sponsorships and purchases is Cathy LaForge, 617 443 1072, claforge@sappartners.org. Tickets are also available at                 www.sappartners.org/itheko.

An additional funding opportunity will be held during the event where top contributors will receive a one-of-a-kind event centerpiece sculpture entitled “The Caregiver,” created by award winning artist Jill Solomon. Ms Solomon is a native of South Africa who now lives on the North Shore and has a long affiliation with Harvard University, the Mass Artists Foundation and the Society of Designer Craftsmen in New England.
