Join Shelter Music Boston for a presentation of the composition workshops that were conducted in local homeless shelters and recovery programs earlier this year. Envisioned by SMB Founder and Artistic Director Julie Leven, these workshops enabled homeless guests and musical artists to create contemporary chamber music together.
Attendees of this interactive workshop, led by Julie Leven and marimba player Jennie Dorris, will work together to compose a new musical work, just like our shelter audiences. Experience the sense of empowerment gained as you watch YOUR music unfold before your eyes (and ears)!
Julie Leven will also premiere a new work for solo violin titled “Wicked Spirits,” by Danielle Williams. This piece, part of a five-movement suite, was inspired by the results of SMB’s workshops in the shelters and a comment from one of our homeless listeners that music helps “keep the wicked spirits in line.”
This FREE event is an excellent opportunity to learn about Shelter Music Boston and our collaborative project to empower homeless individuals by including them in the creative process and by placing their creations alongside Mozart and Beethoven in a future concert. This project is funded by The Boston Foundation’s Live Arts Boston grant.
A light breakfast will be served. Register today at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/composing-in-boston-homeless-shelters-tickets-39668371166 to reserve your spot!
