Asha de Vos is the founder of Oceanswell and The Sri Lankan Blue Whale Project, the first long-term study on blue whales in the northern Indian Ocean. Her work has been funded by the Aquarium’s Marine Conservation Action Fund. Sri Lankan blue whales are a unique, non-migrating, endangered subspecies. They measure half a meter shorter and have a unique vocal call from other blue whales. They breed six months out of phase with other pygmy blue whales in the Southern Hemisphere, and they are unusual in that they do not migrate to colder waters but remain in warm tropical waters year-round in the Northern Indian Ocean which makes them increasingly vulnerable to human interaction. In particular, they live in one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes, and whale deaths due to ship-strikes are well documented and likely to increase. What are some of the ongoing efforts to mitigate whale deaths by ships? And, what is being done to protect this unique population of blue whales?
